For the times where even on a clear night...

...where nobody can understand a word you're saying.  This is espcially frustrating to the ham radio operator.  However, when saying your calls on voice modes, you don't have to struggle.  You can use the NATO Phonetic Alphabet.  They will help you out when there is hard static on your frequency, or you have an international caller.  For example my calls KB3FIT would be tough to understand...in the phonetic alphabet, I can say "KILO BRAVO THREE FOXTROT INDIA TANGO"

Practice these letters by spelling out your own name.  It'll be fun.  May be wierd at first but it does serve a purpose.  Also, aside from the high-static factor, there are people who cannot speak English very well.  So do remember to be a good neighbor and help out a Ham.  Who knows...you may strike up a friendship.
