Let's say that you and a contact are enjoying a good convo, and you hear an SOS coming over on your frequency. What should you do? The first thing for you and your contact should not do is panic. That won't make things any easier. What you both can do when faced with this situation is:
- Acknowlege the distress call
- Ask the nature of the emergency and record the time
- Ask the geographical location (ask lattitude and longitude of the caller)
- Once you have the exact location try to get in touch with the authorities
- Stay on the air, and communicate with the person
- Remember to call off your call Letters!
You may or may not get an emergency call. By being calm, and doing what you need to do, you will save a life. This goes doubly for severe weather/civil emergency.
Also...there are times as an operator that you'll not be allowed to operate during an emergency. If you can't, operate, offer to help out. There are local SKYWARN chapters that you can check into. These classes are administered by the county EMA and the National Weather Service.
